“Portland Head Light” is a historic Lighthouse located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The Lighthouse sits at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor. Construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington and was completed on January 10, 1791, Making Portland Head Light the oldest Lighthouse in the State of Maine. The Lighthouse has changed little with the exception of rebuilding the whistle house in 1975, as it was badly damaged in a storm. Today, Portland Head Light stands 80 feet above ground and 101 feet above the ocean. It’s vibrant white conical tower is connected to the Victorian Style Keeper’s House. The Beacon is visible to Mariners for 24 nautical miles. Portland Head Light was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
